You don’t have to empty your bank account to upgrade an outdated kitchen. Here’s how you can lend class (while keeping it functional) and give it a makeover.
Spending a big chunk of your saving towards renovating the kitchen is an idea not everybody fancies. Hence, Minnie Bhatt, design director, Minnie Bhatt Design, gives us a lowdown on how one can redecorate the cooking corner in an affordable budget:
If it is a rental apartment:
Add a dash of new colour to one side of the wall, maybe yellow or green as it exudes warmth; Put up a pin-up board on one part of the wall and decorate it with your favourite recipes, doodles, artwork or pictures; Indoor plants exude great energy; hence, include that in your plan; Lighting plays a very important role in setting the mood. So, opt for LED lighting and let it illuminate the area.
If it is for self-use:
Add a small breakfast table, if possible, with chairs or bar stools; Change the wall tiles above the hob to decorative ones; Get a customised modular kitchen, depending on the size and your preference; Add or convert a few existing top storage shutters to a textured glass shutter.
Crunched for space?
Today, large homes have become a thing of the past. Apartments are getting smaller and compact with every passing day. So, the need of the hour is to make optimum use of the given space while also making a statement. “People are more frequently observed to own smaller abodes in today’s time. Hence, it is important that we combine aesthetics with functionality. People are increasingly opting for the ‘island kitchen style’ as it offers additional storage space with ample number of drawers, cabinets and shelves. Also, you can opt for a white wash, as it gives an illusion of more space. Besides, modular kitchens are a safer bet as they are designed, especially for small spaces,” mentions Tomy Sebastian, CEO, JSL Lifestyle Ltd & JSL Arc Ltd.
Do you feel inspired to get off your chair and give your kitchen a swoon-worthy makeover? If yes, then make sure you don’t overlook these steps, says Dimple Nahar of 2DIVINE The Lifestyle Temple:
Ensure you are abreast with the latest technology and kitchenware; Depending on the space available, give your kitchen an upgrade;
Ensure you pick the tiles for the flooring of the kitchen that complement your wall and uplift the entire mood;
One should avoid going for cabinets, which can get rustic or can lead to corrosion;
Ensure that your cylinder and refrigerator fit properly in the space available and there is enough provision to store utensils, ladles and grains.
